EL FARO SHIP SINKING: EL FARO MAY HAVE SUFFERED BOILER BLAST

Lou O’Donnell, assistant chief surveyor with the American Bureau of Shipping, told the panel on Friday that the cargo ship’s hot boiler could have exploded if it was exposed to cold water entering the sinking ship. The El Faro sank on Oct. 1, 2015, while traveling between Jacksonville, Florida, and Puerto Rico. All 33 aboard died.

2 KILLED, 6 INJURED IN NORTH FLORIDA CRASH

The Florida Highway Patrol tells local media outlets that 35-year-old Barbara Armstrong and her passenger, 49-year-old Ronnie Cochran, were traveling north on U.S. 17 in Putnam County Thursday evening when their car crossed the center line and hit an oncoming SUV. Armstrong and Cochran both died.

MAN CONVICTED OF TRYING TO KILL POLICE OFFICER IN SHOOTOUT

Roshad Smith was found guilty Wednesday of attempted first-degree murder. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 22. Police say Smith was walking down a federal highway in Sanford, Florida, and pointing a gun at vehicles in January 2016. When police arrived, Smith began shooting at them, and they returned fire.

COAST GUARD: CUBAN NATIONAL SUSPECTED OF HUMAN SMUGGLING

According to a Coast Guard statement Friday, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection airplane crew spotted a suspicious vessel Tuesday near the Bahamas. The statement says that the vessel would not stop when U.S. authorities intercepted it about 12 miles southeast of Miami.

POLICE: NO ON HURT WHEN BBS SHATTER WINDOWS ON SCHOOL VAN

No one was injured in the Friday morning incident. Miami-Dade police say they don’t know who fired the shots. Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told local news outlets that four bullet holes were visible in two of the van windows. The 14 children were in a van that parents hired to take them to school. Officials say the adults were heading to a Jewish community center in Miami.
