GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - A Hudson Valley man will stand trial for the slaying of an 81-year-old woman after turning down a plea offer.

The Middletown Times Herald-Record reports that 22-year-old Devin Giordano faces felony charges of murder, arson and evidence tampering in the death of Helen Mills.

Mills was beaten and strangled in her home in August 2014, and her house was set on fire to conceal the crime. Prosecutors say the attackers were looking for money to buy heroin.

Co-defendant Jennifer Molyneaux has already pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Jury selection begins Feb. 22 for Giordano’s murder trial. Prosecutors say they’ll recommend a sentence of 22 years to life.
