HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a state trooper is recovering from head injuries suffered when he was dragged by a vehicle he had pulled over on a Long Island highway.

State police say the trooper conducted a traffic stop on a man driving on the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say the 29-year-old Queens man driving the car sped off from the highway’s right shoulder as the trooper leaned into the driver’s-side window. The car dragged the trooper across all three traffic lanes before hitting the concrete center median.

A motorist’s cellphone video obtained by WABC-TV (https://7ny.tv/2lb1RCp ) shows the driver exiting the passenger-side door with the trooper hanging onto him. The trooper, the right side of his face bloodied, subdued the man with the help of passers-by.

The charges against the driver include assault and resisting arrest.
