WASHINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in Beaufort County have charged a woman in connection with the accidental shooting death of her 6-year-old niece.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office tells local media outlets that Bambi Dickerson, the aunt of six-year-old Victoria Whitehurst, is charged with misdemeanor failure to store a firearm to protect a minor.

Deputies say Victoria Whitehurst was visiting a home in Pinetown on Jan. 3, where an 11-year-old boy showed her and another relative a shotgun he’d gotten for Christmas. The gun went off, killing the girl. Authorities say the children were related.

The sheriff’s office says Dickerson is free on bond. It’s not known if she has an attorney.
