GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials say a knife-wielding man who was shot by a deputy in Goodyear has died.

They announced Friday that 42-year-old Pedro Rubio was taken to a trauma center after Thursday afternoon’s incident and had been listed in serious condition.

Sheriff’s officials say they recovered a knife and other evidence at the scene.

The 12-year veteran deputy was getting lunch when his vehicle was hit from behind by Rubio’s car in a parking lot.

After the deputy got out of his car, authorities say Rubio began walking toward the deputy while carrying a knife.

The deputy allegedly told Rubio several times to drop the knife, but he kept advancing.

Sheriff’s officials say Rubio was shot at least once.

The deputy wasn’t injured. His name hasn’t been released yet.
