A Republican Party official is facing criticism after she enthusiastically shared an article calling for the death of Sen. John McCain as the senator recovers from surgery.

Diana Orrock, the Republican national committeewoman for Nevada, tweeted “Amen @caitoz,” in response to a Medium post by Caitlin Johnstone titled, “Please Just F—ing Die Already.”

In the article, Ms. Johnstone calls Mr. McCain, an Arizona Republican, a “murderous warmongering neocon” who deserves to die.

Ms. Johnstone writes, “If you’re waiting for the part where I say I’m just kidding and would never wish death on anybody, please allow me to make myself clear: I sincerely, genuinely hope that Arizona Senator John McCain’s heart stops beating, and that he is subsequently declared dead by qualified medical professionals very soon.”

Ms. Orrock later deleted her endorsement of the article and explained to CNN that while she doesn’t literally want Mr. McCain to die, she does agree with Ms. Johnstone’s “sentiments” about his foreign policy.

Ms. Orrock, a supporter of President Trump, said she isn’t a “big fan” of Mr. McCain’s hawkish policies and wants him out of the Senate, but she denied that she is joining the call for Mr. McCain’s demise.

“People are going to read things into things,” she told CNN.

She apologized in a tweet late Monday.

Mr. McCain is recovering after undergoing surgery Friday to remove a blood clot from his left eye. A vote on the Senate Republican health care bill was delayed until Mr. McCain returns.
