PICAYUNE, Miss. (AP) - Voters in south Mississippi have chosen a new member of the state House of Representatives.

The Picayune Item reports that Stacey Hobgood Wilkes defeated two other candidates in a special election Tuesday in District 108 in Pearl River County.

She succeeds fellow Republican Mark Formby, who had served in the House since 1993 and stepped down in April when he joined the state Workers Compensation Commission.

Wilkes will fill more than half of a four-year term started by Formby. It ends in January 2020.

Special election candidates run without party labels, but often tell voters their party preference. Wilkes serves on the state Republican executive committee.
