CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island police officer faces federal charges alleging he sexually abused a woman twice while she was in custody.

Suffolk County Officer Christopher McCoy was arrested Thursday.

His attorney declined to comment.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/2w3MkbL ) says McCoy has been suspended without pay since April.

The woman said in a May lawsuit that she was abused after being arrested over traffic warrants that had already been addressed.

Prosecutors say McCoy forced himself on her after she refused to engage in a sex act. They say the alleged abuse was halted when someone entered the room, but then resumed later that day.

The head of the FBI’s New York office, William Sweeney, urged any other possible victims to come forward.

The police department says it’s cooperating with the FBI investigation.
