A Democratic Party official was filmed over the weekend berating a group of gas tax opponents trying to collect signatures in Fullerton, California.

San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, a Republican, and his husband, San Diego Gay and Lesbian News Publisher Johnathan Hale, were petitioning at a local Wal-Mart to recall Democratic state Sen. Josh Newman over his support for the gas tax, Fox News reported.

A video shot by Mr. Hale reportedly showed Jeff LeTourneau, the co-chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County, who is also gay, aggressively approaching the group’s table and asking, “Which one of you a—holes is the gay?”

“How f–ing dare you be in this county. Get your s– and get out of here!” he yelled. “You’re a f–ing disgrace to any gay person I know, piece of s–.”

The volunteers remained calm throughout the exchange, repeatedly telling Mr. LeTourneau to “step back” and stop “bullying.”

“You can intimidate all you want, sir. This is the democratic process,” a volunteer said.

Mr. LeTourneau then whipped out his phone and started recording Mr. Hale, telling him: “I’m going to make sure everybody in the LGBTQ community knows.”

At one point, Mr. LeTourneau argued with a woman trying to sign the petition. The woman told him to step away so she could sign, prompting him to yell, “I don’t need to step away! Are you kidding me? I’m not stepping away.”

A man identified as a Wal-Mart manager intervened, informing Mr. LeTourneau that he was badgering someone with the “democratic right” to sign the petition.

A second video shot by Mr. Hale showed Mr. LeTourneau filming Mr. Hale sitting inside his parked vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

“I am not opposed to either party discussing policy,” Mr. Hale said in a statement. “But when it comes to this type of bullying and name calling I get concerned about the state of politics and where the democratic process is headed. I will not be bullied or verbally attacked for practicing my rights as an American citizen or a member of the LGBT community from either party. I will use my resources to expose it when it happens.”

“LeTourneau clearly thinks that if you are gay, you can only be a Democrat, which is both arrogant and highly offensive,” Mr. DeMaio, the founder of Reform California, a PAC leading the Newman recall, told Fox News. “The idea that Californians are sick of paying higher taxes cuts across party lines and sexual orientation.”
