NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has announced that the first stage of repairs to the Newport Pell Bridge has been completed ahead of schedule.

The authority said Tuesday that all travel lanes in both directions of the bridge reopened before the scheduled completion date of Thursday and will stay open this summer.

Workers in May began replacing the concrete roadway deck from curb to curb for 200 feet of the westbound and eastbound lanes on the east approach on the Newport side of the bridge. Crews removed and then poured new concrete.

The work had required lane closures and single travel lanes in each direction.

The authority says that starting Sept. 19, an above-deck reconstruction will restart and continue through December. The work will again require single travel lanes.
