MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) - A judge has upheld his own ruling earlier this month that the Muscatine mayor be returned to office while the appeal of her removal is heard.

The City Council voted May 11 to remove Diana Broderson as mayor, saying she had created unnecessary legal and staff costs and potential liability. But Muscatine County District Judge Mark Smith ruled June 16 that she be returned to office, saying there were “inherent conflicts of interest” in the council’s vote to remove her.

The Muscatine Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2t9GPI6 ) that the city’s attorney, Amy Reasner, filed a request last week for Broderson’s reinstatement to be reversed. On Thursday, the judge denied Reasner’s request.

A court hearing on Broderson’s appeal is set for July 17.
