HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) - Police in Massachusetts say a driver who fled officers after a traffic stop and crashed into a telephone pole has died.

Merrimac Police Chief Eric Shears says the man died shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday after the Haverhill crash.

An officer had stopped a vehicle around 4 p.m. for having an expired registration. Police say the driver sped off as the officer approached the vehicle. They say the officer was unable to catch the driver, and encountered the vehicle after it had crashed.

The driver’s identity has not been released.
