NEW YORK (AP) - New York City police say a 5-year-old boy celebrating his birthday was gravely injured after being shot by a stray bullet.

It happened at about 5 p.m. Monday outside a building on Washington Avenue in the Bronx.

Police say the boy had just finished visiting his father and was being walked to a waiting car when a man fired at least four shots at another man.

Police say one of the bullets struck the child in the head. The boy was hospitalized in grave condition.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called the shooting “absolutely heartbreaking” and said doctors were working to save his life.

Detectives are looking for surveillance video in an attempt to identify the shooter.

There have been no arrests.
