PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A federally protected hawk is healing after being shot in Providence.

WJAR-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2sztR5Z ) that the injured red-tailed hawk is recovering at the Born to Be Wild Nature Center. The raptor was initially transported to the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island after it was captured by the state Department of Environmental Management in Providence.

Officials say the hawk has a fractured right wing where a pellet struck it. The hawk is being kept in an outdoor enclosure where it will eat and regain strength.

Employees at the center expect a full recovery as long as the bone heals well.

Both state and federal law prohibits the shooting of red-tailed hawks.
