WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Police say a good Samaritan stopped a robbery after fighting with an armed gunman attempting to hold up a New Jersey convenience store.

The 26-year-old suspect entered the Winslow Township Wawa in the early hours of Wednesday morning, brandishing a gun and ordering store clerks to the ground. NJ.com reports (https://bit.ly/2rNS48u ) Darryl, who police only identified by his first name, tackled the gunman and proceeded to fight him.

Police arrived to find the gunman disarmed and both men injured. They later determined the gun was not loaded. Both men were taken to local hospitals and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police Chief George Smith says Darryl is a hero but doesn’t recommend others to do what he did.
