GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Demolition work has begun to make way for the new Gulfport aquarium.

WLOX-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2mvRdH1 ) the former home of Big Mike’s Speakeasy was demolished to make way for the aquarium.

An old restaurant, a nearby church and Masonic building will also be demolished to make way for the new construction.

The aquarium project will cover property from 23rd Avenue to the old Gulfport library location.

The demolition comes after the Gulfport City Council on Tuesday voted to unanimously to approve the $93 million budget for the aquarium project.

Mayor Billy Hewes called it a “monumental day.”
