SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Zoo says a popular African elephant has died of unknown causes.

Officials say 44-year-old Mila was found dead Tuesday.

The Union-Tribune says (https://bit.ly/2mwsrFb) the elephant came to San Diego three years ago from a wildlife sanctuary where it had killed its keeper after getting spooked by an electrified fence.

Mila’s stay at the sanctuary came after a 30-year stint as the only elephant in a New Zealand circus.

San Diego Zoo officials say Mila had integrated with the herd and liked to play in the mud on hot days.

A necropsy is planned to determine the cause of death.
