SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine State Police say three detainees are back in custody after taking a stolen SUV for a joyride.

Troopers say the teens - 18 and 19 years old - were staying with Long Creek Youth Development Center staff at the Stratton Brook Hut near Carrabassett Valley when they slipped away and stole the sport utility vehicle early Friday.

They were later spotted in Greater Portland. Troopers performed a maneuver to force the vehicle to crash and roll over into a snowbank to end the chase before reaching the heavily populated Maine Mall area. The three were taken into custody at 10:30 a.m. in South Portland.

In addition to the stolen SUV, cash, wine, a tablet device and other items were taken from the Stratton Brook Huts, where the teens were staying with Long Creek staffers overnight.

This story has been corrected to show the teens were 18 and 19 years old, not 18 as originally reported.
