SUSSEX, Del. (AP) - Union officials say a correctional officer was treated for a bite on the hand after a struggle with an inmate at the Sussex Correctional Institution.

The Correctional Officers Association of Delaware announced Friday that the officer was bitten by a drunken woman who fought with officers as they tried to put restraints on her. She was being transferred to a hospital for treatment early Thursday morning.

According to WDEL-FM (https://bit.ly/2mRFlPt ), the union says the officer wasn’t seriously hurt.

The incident comes after an uprising at a different state prison last month renewed attention to chronic complaints from correctional officers about understaffing and low pay that have resulted in high turnover, low morale and frequent use of mandatory overtime.
