SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah officials are warning residents about phone scams targeting those with solar panels on their homes and businesses.

Julie Price with the state Department of Commerce says there has been a rise in the number of solar-related phone scams in the last two months.

Rocky Mountain Power says it has received numerous reports from businesses about callers falsely claiming to be affiliated with the utility and using scare tactics to convince customers they will have their power shut off if they don’t pay immediately.

Utility spokesman Paul Murphy says customers are always given several warnings and the option to set up a payment plan before their power is shut off.
