Veteran journalist and author Gay Talese feels sorry for Kevin Spacey, telling Vanity Fair that he hates actor Anthony Rapp for opening the floodgates against Mr. Spacey and ruining his career.

Mr. Talese, 85, said at the annual Library Lions Gala in New York Monday night that he wants his next project to be a profile of Mr. Spacey, after Mr. Spacey was fired from the hit Netflix series “House of Cards” amid numerous sexual assault and harassment allegations.

“I would like to talk to Kevin Spacey,” Mr. Talesetold Vanity Fair.

Mr. Talese said he especially hated the actor who “ruined” Mr. Spacey’s career, referring to “Star Trek” actor Anthony Rapp, who made the first allegation against Mr. Spacey.

Mr. Rapp, 46, accused Mr. Spacey of making an inappropriate sexual advance toward him when he was just 14 in 1986. The allegations started a domino effect against Mr. Spacey, with numerous men coming forward to make similar allegations. Netflix announced Friday that Mr. Spacey had been fired as star of “House of Cards.”

“I feel so sad, and I hate that actor that ruined this guy’s career,” Mr. Talese said. “So, OK, it happened 10 years ago … Jesus, suck it up once in a while!

“I would like to ask [Mr. Spacey] how it feels to lose a lifetime of success and hard work all because of 10 minutes of indiscretion 10 years or more ago,” he added. “You know something, all of us in this room at one time or another did something we’re ashamed of. The Dalai Lama has done something he’s ashamed of. The Dalai Lama should confess … put that in your magazine!”

Vanity Fair noted that it’s possible Mr. Talese “had not kept up with the growing scope of the accusations” against Mr. Spacey and was potentially reacting to old information. The magazine did not conduct a follow-up.
