INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say an Indiana state trooper shot and badly wounded a 26-year-old man who fired shots at the trooper and a police dog during a foot chase in Indianapolis.

State police say a trooper stopped Cortez Boxley of Indianapolis on the city’s far east side Tuesday night while searching for two people who had fled police. Trooper Walter Butt was trying to search Boxley before he ran away.

Sgt. John Perrine says the trooper sent his dog to pursue Boxley. Perrine says Boxley fired shots and the trooper then shot Boxley, who was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Perrine says the trooper wasn’t injured. The dog, named Apache, ran from the scene but was found 12 hours later with a neck wound from which he’s expected to fully recover.
