PHOENIX (AP) - Glendale officials have decided against extending metro Phoenix’s light rail line westward into downtown Glendale.

The Arizona Republic reports that a divided Glendale City Council recently directed its staff against moving forward with the route.

The decision comes 16 years after Glendale voters approved a sales tax increase, in part for light rail, and after years of planning.

The council had approved a route into downtown Glendale in 2016. At the time, some on the council had hoped to eventually extend the line to the University of Phoenix Stadium.

In backing away from the light rail plan, the council majority cited concerns such as price, that few people actually take advantage of light rail and that it wouldn’t provide the sought-after economic boost.
