DECORAH, Iowa (AP) - A Decorah man faces charges after authorities found dead feeder calves on his property.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that 51-year-old Craig Scott Underbakke was arrested on charges of livestock neglect and seven counts of failure to dispose of livestock. All of the charges are misdemeanors.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a report Tuesday about the conditions at Underbakke’s farm west of Burr Oak, leading deputies to investigate.

Officials say 24 feeder calves were found dead and in different stages of decomposition on the property, and another 20 malnourished feeder calves were seized.

The surviving animals were removed to a private feed lot and are under the care of a veterinarian.

A woman who answered the phone at Underbakke’s home Saturday said he was unavailable to speak.
