WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Police in Delaware say an officer is on administrative leave after being charged with assault in connection with an off-duty domestic incident.

The News Journal and WDEL-FM report the officer is a five-year veteran of the New Castle County Police Department.

A police spokesman said the department wouldn’t release the officer’s name in order to protect the victim.

The officer was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. The officer is on administrative leave with pay as an internal investigation is conducted.

The news outlets report the officer was released on $1,000 unsecured bail pending a court appearance.

No further details were immediately released.
