CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Highway Patrol says a man was thrown from an SUV which jumped the rail on a highway flyover and landed on an interstate.

The patrol told local media outlets that 48-year-old Robert Kite was driving on the Interstate 485 loop ramp south of Charlotte Tuesday when he lost control of the SUV and drove off the flyover. According to troopers, the SUV crashed onto the outer lanes of I-485 just below the loop ramp.

According to investigators, Kite was ejected from the vehicle, but the SUV went over the rail and landed on the guardrail next to southbound Interstate 77. Troopers say Kite was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers haven’t said whether speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.
