Lena Dunham made an explosive claim this week that President Trump is a mentally ill racist, comparing him to convicted mass murderer Dylann Roof.

The “Girls” star and writer made the comment on Twitter Monday evening in response to “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” writer Travon Free, who attacked the mainstream media for being too “afraid” to label the president a racist, despite his supposedly racist history.

Ms. Dunham replied, “Not only is he a racist but he’s a racist with untreated mental illness. So under diff circumstances he’s Dylann Roof.”

Roof is a 23-year-old white supremacist who was convicted of killing nine black parishioners at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015. Roof was sentenced to death in January.

Ms. Dunham’s comments come amid controversy over NFL players kneeling for the national anthem to protest racial injustice in America. Mr. Trump has attacked players who protest the anthem, saying they should be fired and the NFL should impose rules disallowing it. The president’s remarks sparked a show of solidarity among many NFL players, who either knelt or locked arms during the national anthem before Sunday’s and Monday’s games.

Ms. Dunham said the protesting players showed true courage.

“Do people get how much bravery it takes to stand up to the pres, whether you’re rich or not? These players are black Americans,” she tweeted. “Along with the president’s ire they get every violent racist who supports him. They are deluged with threats. Have to shield their families.”
