BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A Washburn man convicted of committing sex crimes against a boy in 2011 has been sentenced to life in prison.

Thirty-eight-year-old Russell Everett Jr. was charged a year ago and convicted by a jury in June. The Bismarck Tribune reports that he was recently sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Burleigh County Assistant State’s Attorney Marina Spahr had asked that Everett be sentenced to serve 20 years in prison. Judge Bruce Haskell went well beyond the recommendation, summarizing Everett’s history of substance abuse and his criminal record before handing down the life sentence.

Everett told the judge he maintains his innocence.
