NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) - Researchers are investigating the deaths of two whales after their carcasses washed up this week on the Rhode Island shore.

A minke whale was discovered near Scarborough Beach in Narragansett on Wednesday less than 24 hours after a humpback was found near the Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island.

Mystic Aquarium tells The Providence Journal that members of its veterinary team have examined the minke carcass and taken samples for analysis. They say the humpback is an area that is difficult to reach, preventing a necropsy, but samples will be taken when conditions are safe.

At least four whales have washed up on the Rhode Island shore this summer.
