BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Bennington man who police say sold heroin that resulted in a fatal overdose faces up to 20 years in prison under a plea deal with prosecutors.

Prosecutors say 38-year-old Trevor Shepard sold fentanyl-laced heroin that killed 31-year-old Clark Salmon in 2016. The Bennington Banner reports Shepard pleaded no contest Tuesday in Bennington to the felony charge.

Under a plea agreement, prosecutors will cap their sentencing request to between eight to 20 years to serve. The judge accepted the plea agreement, which also calls for other charges to be dismissed during sentencing.

Shepard’s attorney did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

The state’s attorney indicated a victim impact statement would be delivered at the sentencing hearing.
