Actor Jerry O’Connell responded to liberal backlash and cries of sexism by renaming his show “Real Men Watch Bravo” in order to be more inclusive.

Mr. O’Connell, whose credits include “Sliders” and “Jerry Maguire,” said this week during a Q&A on AOL’s Build series that he changed the show’s name to “Play by Play” after people complained the original title was sexist and homophobic.

“It rightfully so caught a lot of heat,” he said. “We want to apologize for that title; we didn’t think it was as insensitive . . . we heard everyone’s voices when we came out with that title. … We don’t want anyone to feel excluded in any way.”

Mr. O’Connell refused to even repeat the name of the original title.

“There will be no more mention of gender in that title or anything; we’re really sorry about that,” he said. “We really heard everyone’s issues with it, and we made sure to change it.”

Mr. O’Connell addressed the controversy again Tuesday night on PeopleTV’s “Chatter,” saying the backlash over the original title was “justified.”

“We were trying to make a joke, a play on the words ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,’ ‘New York,’ so it was called the aforementioned title,” he said. “And it doesn’t sound very inclusionary that title. And, you know, we all have Twitter accounts … and we heard everyone’s voices. … Because we are inclusionary AF and we wanted people to know that.”

Mr. O’Connell will produce and host “Play by Play,” a late-night talk show that discusses hot topics pertaining to the reality shows on the network.

Bravo had previously released a statement saying: “Real Bravo executives love real feedback. Bravo has always prided itself on being inclusive. This show is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of all things Bravo featuring a diverse range of perspectives. The original title was not meant to be exclusionary.”
