FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - The sheriff’s deputy who arrested the suspect in a mass shooting at a Florida airport is being honored as a hero.

The Florida Sheriffs Association has chosen 52-year-old Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Jesus “Jesse” Madrigal as the 2018 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. The Sun Sentinel reports the 14-year veteran of the sheriff’s department is being honored as an exemplary model of honor, service and courage.

Prosecutors say Madrigal was on an off-duty detail at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in January 2017 when 28-year-old Esteban Santiago fatally shot five people and injured six others at a baggage claim area. Madrigal got Santiago to drop his gun and get on the ground and then arrested him.

Santiago pleaded guilty in May in exchange for a life prison sentence.
