DAVENPORT, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a Florida woman and her live-in boyfriend have been charged in the death of the woman’s 2-year-old son.

A Polk County Sheriff’s Office news release says 26-year-old Shannon Short and 26-year-old Christian Thompson were arrested Thursday. Both face manslaughter and child abuse charges, while Thompson also faces a first-degree murder charge.

Authorities say Harley Hiatt Jr. was rushed to a Davenport hospital early Tuesday morning. Medical staff determined the boy was suffering from a brain bleed, and he was pronounced dead several hours later. An autopsy determined the child had suffered from internal and external injuries.

Investigators determined that Thompson, encouraged by Short, had regularly engaged in malicious punishment of the child. Officials say the couple then failed to provide medical care that could have saved the boy.
