LINDEN, N.J. (AP) - A man who barricaded himself inside a home after a car chase with police has been charged with robbery, burglary, carjacking and other offenses.

Police say Willie Wright of Newark tried to carjack a car at gunpoint Sunday morning at a shopping center in Linden but was thwarted when the occupant fought back.

Fleeing in a different car, he was pursued by police and eventually ran into the basement of a house and barricaded himself for nearly five hours. The house’s occupants escaped unharmed.

Wright eventually was taken into custody at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Wright was being held at Union County Jail pending a detention hearing. It wasn’t known if he had retained an attorney who could comment on the charges.
