ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A now-former police officer in South Carolina who worked as a school resource officer has been accused of beating his wife.

WLTX-TV reported last week that 43-year-old Eric Bonaparte has since been fired from his job at the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety. An Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office report says Bonaparte is accused of punching his wife during a holiday party this month and then continuing to beat her when they got home.

It says an officer responding to the attack found the woman bruised and with a swollen eye. Authorities arrested Bonaparte in Norway, South Carolina, on charges including third-degree domestic violence. The station says Orangeburg DPS Chief Mike Adams fired Bonaparte while he was being arrested.

Bonaparte denies the allegations. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
