BISHOP, Calif. (AP) - Firefighters have increased containment of a wildfire below the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada north of Bishop.

Cal Fire says the 3½-square-mile (9-square-kilometer) fire near Pleasant Valley Reservoir in Inyo County is 35 percent surrounded early Tuesday.

Fire activity has been reduced to creeping and smoldering.

The fire started Sunday afternoon and significant winds hampered firefighting. Evacuations were ordered as it threatened up to 500 structures.

Evacuations have been lifted, except for a few residences that have power issues.

In Los Angeles County, a fire erupted Monday in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains above the community of Altadena but firefighters were able to contain it at 1 acre event though strong winds swept across Southern California.
