PHOENIX (AP) - An inner-city Phoenix elementary school is fundraising online so it can keep its school resource officer on campus.

KTVK-TV reports Wilson Elementary School was not selected to receive a state grant to fund an on-campus police officer for the next cycle.

Principal Cindy Campton says the school’s funding for the officer will run out in May unless it can raise $105,000 each year for the next two years.

Campton says the officer does 200 hours of law-related education, accompanies teachers on home visits and takes crime-related reports in additional to providing security to the school.

Campton says the school is in a high-crime area, making it vital for an officer to be on campus.

Campton started a GoFundMe page to raise money.
