SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A 75-year-old man has been found guilty of financially exploiting an older Springfield woman.

Howard Roberts of Springfield was convicted Friday for persuading the 78-year-old woman to invest more than $300,000 in his supplement business.

The Springfield News-Leader reports authorities say Roberts‘ victim has bipolar disorder.

Roberts maintained his innocence, saying the woman decided on her own to invest in his company, Maximum Performance, which made supplements for horses and human athletes.

Prosecutors say the company was based in Kentucky and was not registered to sell stock in Missouri, meaning Roberts broke the law when he sold the woman $250,000 in stock. The woman also bought a truck and horse trailers for the company.

Prosecutors say Roberts also tried to gain control over the woman’s finances.
