HILDEBRAN, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Highway Patrol has charged a truck driver after a woman was killed when her SUV jumped a guardrail and landed in the opposite lane of Interstate 40.

The News Herald of Morganton reports the patrol cited witnesses who said the woman, 43-year-old Kau Xiong of Conover, was driving a Toyota 4Runner westbound on Wednesday when the truck cut her off.

According to the patrol, the SUV began to spin, overturned in the median, jumped the guardrail and landed in the eastbound lanes. The truck driver stopped and spoke with troopers.

The patrol said 47-year-old James Rochester III of Benson is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He is in the Burke County jail under a $2,500 bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
