MSNBC host Chris Matthews apologized Friday after leaked footage showed him joking about slipping Hillary Clinton a “Bill Cosby pill” before he interviewed the former presidential candidate in 2016.

Mr. Matthews made the offending comment as he was prepping for an interview with Mrs. Clinton at an Iowa fire station during the Democratic primary season on Jan. 5, 2016, The Cut reported.

“Can I have some of the queen’s waters? Precious waters?” the “Hardball” host asked staffers, according to the video.

“Where’s that Bill Cosby pill I brought with me?” he added, laughing.

Mr. Matthews told The Cut that he deeply regretted the comment.

“This was a terrible comment I made in poor taste during the height of the Bill Cosby headlines,” he said. “I realize that’s no excuse. I deeply regret it and I’m sorry.”
