Just days after Amena Khan was announced as L’Oreal’s first hijab-wearing hair model, the British beauty blogger said Monday that she was backing out of the campaign following backlash for several old tweets that criticized Israel.

“I deeply regret the content of the tweets I made in 2014, and sincerely apologize for the upset and hurt that they have caused,” Ms. Khan wrote. “Championing diversity is one of my passions, I don’t discriminate against anyone. I have chosen to delete them as they do not represent the message of harmony that I stand for.”

“I recently took part in a campaign, which excited me because it celebrated inclusivity,” she continued. “With deep regret, I’ve decided to step down from this campaign because the current conversations surrounding it detract form the positive and inclusive sentiment that it set out to deliver.”

Ms. Khan’s resignation comes less than a week after she announced her inclusion in L’Oreal’s “game changing” campaign for its latest hair care product, Elvive. L’Oreal said it was “proud and excited” to launch “such a unique and disruptive campaign for the haircare market.”

But Ms. Khan immediately came under fire for a series of tweets from 2014 in which she referred to Israel as a “sinister” and “illegal” state of “child murderers.”

“Israel = Pharoah. Both are child murderers. Insha’Allah, defeat also awaits the former; it’s only a matter of time,” she wrote in a now-deleted tweet.

In a statement sent to HuffPost UK, a L’Oreal spokesperson said: “We have recently been made aware of a series of tweets posted in 2014 by Amena Khan, who was featured in a UK advertising campaign.”

“We appreciate that Amena has since apologized for the content of these tweets and the offense they have caused,” the company said. “L’Oréal Paris is committed to tolerance and respect towards all people. We agree with her decision to step down from the campaign.”
