CNN anchor Don Lemon slammed President Trump for repeatedly vilifying the network after a man was arrested for allegedly threatening to murder CNN employees over “fake news.”

Brandon Griesemer, of Michigan, appeared in federal court Friday for allegedly making 22 threatening calls to CNN’s Atlanta headquarters.

“Fake news. I’m coming to gun you all down,” the 19-year-old grocery store worker allegedly told a CNN operator, according to federal court documents obtained by CBS News.

During Tuesday’s “CNN Tonight” broadcast, Mr. Lemon accused the president of fueling hostility toward the network by frequently labeling it “fake news.”

“There’s nothing random about this. Nothing,” the anchor said. “This is what happens when the president of the United States, Donald Trump, repeatedly attacks members of the press simply for reporting facts he does not like.”

“Mr. President, I’m going to speak directly to you: We are not the enemy. We are not trying to silence you,” Mr. Lemon continued. “It is the job of the free press to report the facts, to ask questions — tough questions, ones you don’t like. … No matter how many times you attack us as ‘fake news,’ we will continue to do our jobs.

“If one of us is hurt, or, God forbid, something else in some way or another, because you either don’t understand the power of your words and/or you don’t care, it won’t be a fake injury or a fake death,” he added. “It’ll be real. How will you answer those questions then? Not only from journalists, but from our loved ones, because you’re going to have to do it. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen. Let’s hope you see the error of your ways as well.”

Mr. Trump recognized CNN four times in his “2017 Fake News Awards” list released last week, slamming the network for multiple false reports that painted his administration in a negative light.
