Civil liberties lawyer and prominent liberal Alan Dershowitz on Monday blasted the left for its continued speculation about President Trump’s mental stability.

“It’s very dangerous,” the Harvard Law professor emeritus said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” program. “There’s only one thing worse than trying to criminalize political differences and that’s trying to psychiatrize them.”

“These psychiatrists now who are trying to diagnose without ever having met the man — that’s what they did in Russia. I represented dissidents who they locked up in mental hospitals,” Mr. Dershowitz said. “That’s what they did in China. That’s what they did in apartheid South Africa.

“How dare liberals, people on the left, try to undo democracy by accusing a president of being mentally ill without any basis?” he added. “The 25th Amendment doesn’t apply. Everybody knew who Donald Trump was when they elected him. I didn’t vote for him, I voted against him, people voted for him, but he hasn’t changed in office and this idea of diagnosing him instead of opposing him politically poses an enormous danger.”

Mr. Trump’s critics and political adversaries are openly questioning his basic mental fitness for the office in light of Michael Wolff’s hotly debated tell-all book about the Trump family. Mr. Wolff alleged during an interview Sunday that the 25th Amendment, which addresses the transition of powers if a president is unable to fulfill his duties, was brought up by White House staffers “all the time.”

Politico reported Wednesday that more than a dozen Congress members met with Yale University psychiatry professor Dr. Bandy X. Lee, editor of “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President,” to discuss Mr. Trump’s mental health.

Mr. Trump defended himself as a “very stable genius” in a series of tweets Saturday.

“Now that Russian collusion, after one year of intense study, has proven to be a total hoax on the American public, the Democrats and their lapdogs, the Fake News Mainstream Media, are taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook and screaming mental stability and intelligence,” the president wrote. “Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. Crooked Hillary Clinton also played these cards very hard and, as everyone knows, went down in flames. I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star to President of the United States (on my first try). I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius….and a very stable genius at that!

Mr. Dershowitz said Monday that the 25th Amendment, which has to be invoked by the vice president and then approved by two thirds of both houses of Congress, is merely a pipe dream for liberals angry at Mr. Trump’s politics.

“The 25th Amendment is not supposed to be invoked if you don’t like somebody’s politics or you don’t like his style,” he said. “It’s not going to happen. It’s designed for people who are totally incompetent, not people who you disagree with.”
