GIBSLAND, La. (AP) - A mayor in Louisiana has resigned, citing his mother’s failing health.

KSLA-TV reports Gibsland Mayor Ronnie “Terry” Wilson’s resignation was effective Thursday. Wilson began serving as mayor on Jan. 1, 2015. His term would’ve ended on Dec. 31 this year. The Louisiana secretary of state’s office says a special election is not required to fill the post because less than a year is left in the term.

The station reports someone will be appointed to serve as interim mayor until the term expires. It cites state law as saying the mayor pro-term will serve as mayor until an appointment is made. Mayor Pro-Tem Eddie Thompson says he’s ready to step into the role if needed.

A meeting for the Gibsland Board of Aldermen is set for Monday.
