MORGANTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a decomposing body found near a North Carolina home where three people were killed is the man they wanted to talk to about the shootings.

Burke County deputies said gun was found near 61-year-old Kenneth Powell’s body and they are awaiting ballistics tests to see if it was the same weapon used to kill three people on June 7 in Morganton.

Investigators say Powell knew 23-year-old Trae Ward; 57-year-old Pamela Ward; and 22-year-old Jimmy Stamey. They were all found dead in the home where a 2-year-old was unharmed.

Deputies told news outlets Powell’s body was about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from his apartment.

Deputies haven’t given a motive for the killings.
