ST. LOUIS (AP) - Authorities say an accident at home likely caused the death of an off-duty St. Louis police officer over the weekend.

St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden says the entire department is grieving after Saturday’s death of 27-year-old Alexander Klein.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the St. Louis County officers who responded to Klein’s home found him dead on the rear patio of his home. An autopsy will determine the cause of death, but it was initially reported as an accidental injury.

Klein joined the police department as a dispatcher in 2012, and then became a commissioned officer in January 2014. He is survived by his parents and three brothers.
