Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old socialist who secured a stunning Democratic primary win over New York Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday, has denounced a man she was seen celebrating with at her victory party after his past offensive statements about Jews came to light.

News crews at Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s victory party spotted a man named Thomas Lopez-Pierre celebrating behind her as she spoke about her stunning win against a 10-term incumbent.

Mr. Lopez-Pierre ran unsuccessfully for New York City Council last year on a campaign against “greedy Jewish landlords.”

Thomas Lopez-Pierre believes that most Jewish people in NYC are GOOD PEOPLE but are just unaware of the unethical and greedy business practices of ‘Greedy Jewish Landlords,’” his website declares.

Mr. Lopez-Pierre, who has posted photos on social media of himself volunteering with Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign, told The Forward magazine on Wednesday that he doesn’t consider his statements to be anti-Semitic.

“It is their business model to push out black and Hispanic tenants,” he said of Jewish landlords.

New York City Councilman Mark Levine tweeted that Mr. Lopez-Pierre is notorious for showing up unwanted in campaigns “and frequently jumps into pictures with people who don’t know who he is.”

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez responded, saying she had “no idea” who Mr. Lopez-Pierre was.

“No idea who this guy is, hundreds of folks walked into the hall open to the public last night,” she tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “I absolutely denounce any such bigoted and reprehensible statements.”

Mr. Lopez-Pierre told The Forward that he had been a supporter of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez for “over a year,” but never spoke to her personally.
