BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - One of two suspects who were trying to break into the Billings police department’s evidence building reportedly pointed a gun at a responding officer’s face before running away.

Police Chief Rich St. John says the officer was not hurt and they did not get into the building.

Officers responded at 2:20 a.m. Thursday to an alarm at the evidence facility. The first officer there was checking the perimeter fence when he came face-to-face with two males dressed in black.

St. John says the officer ordered them to stop and show their hands and one of them pointed a handgun at the officer.

The officer quickly retreated and called for backup. The suspects fled and have not been arrested.

A review of security video showed the suspects ran through a cut in the fence as other officers arrived.
