PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former Democratic state representative still facing perjury charges has been endorsed by local Democrats in his bid to recapture his old seat.

John Carnevale faces perjury charges for allegedly lying to the Providence Board of Canvassers about where he lived. He recently filed candidacy papers for his old role in House District 13, challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Ramon Perez.

WPRI-TV reports a document filed with the secretary of state’s office shows the Democratic Representative District Committee for House District 13 voted Wednesday to endorse Carnevale in the September primary. The district includes parts of Providence and Johnston.

Carnevale, first elected in 2009, ended his re-election campaign in 2016 following a WPRI-TV investigation into his residency.

A hearing in Carnevale’s case is set for July 13.
