PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) - A Washington family credits a deputy’s quick action for saving them from a growing fire that spread to their house.

KOMO-TV reports Vince and Mary Cruz say they awoke Tuesday morning to Kitsap County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Herrin pounding on their door, trying to warn them of the fire.

Herrin was driving by when he saw the blaze. A heated chicken coop on the Cruz’s deck had caught fire and spread to the home.

Herrin managed to wake the couple, then helped them search through smoke to find their kids and grandchildren. All seven members of the Cruz family were able to escape the fire unharmed.

The blaze caused an estimated $200,000 in damages.
